Friday Food and Favorites: Amazing Cakes and Their Plates

Thursday, November 01, 2012

In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, I was seriously at a loss as to what to blog about. First I was going to post some of the shocking and disastrous photos that have been floating around the web, but then I decided that what we all really need is a little beauty and optimism...to move forward and try to get back some of the little pleasures in life that have been lost.
When a catastrophe happens, human reaction happens in stages. At first we're all in denial. What we see on the news doesn't ever really happen to us here! And New York City? It's indestructible! (Even 9/11 didn't take away that perpetual New York energy and spirit of survival and life.) Water in the subways? Millions without power? Childhood beach towns washed away? So what!? We WILL survive and life WILL be the same. We are stubborn and adamant. But then slowly the truth seeps into the crevices of our being, and this overwhelming melancholy sets in. We realize that the things we think will be forever may not be. That we are spoiled and what was once unthinkable is happening today: We may not find gas for our cars and generators, we may have a hard time getting the food that was always so readily and abundantly available, we may not be able to restore our homes to the way they were, and we will never experience our beach towns in the same way.

But then, hopefully, the next stage is acceptance and hope. Hope for a brighter and better future. Hope for renewal and rebuilding. And hope for extra doses of kindness amongst humans. So today all I want to do is share something really really pretty and celebratory, and what could be better than some fabulous cakes from Pinterest. After all, my survival instincts have been in full gear and I've been thinking (and eating) a lot more about carbs than clothes anyway.

I'd also like to introduce you all to my new Fashion-isha Amazon store that I've been working on. A friend of mine pointed out that my shopping boutique on Lyst.com requires a sign in and lots of people may not be interested in doing that. So I've created my Fashion-isha Amazon Shop with you in mind. There are loads of shoes, boots, skirts, dresses and even beautiful items for your home. I've added some beautiful things for your kitchen too, including gorgeous cake platters, so apropos, and available to purchase right here at the end of this post!

So enjoy this little escape into cake...

  5. You are right, there should be hope after any huge event like this, but I have to admit that I have no idea how I would cope and I can see how some of these poor people affected would lose all faith... I do like your positive outlook, it's a good mindset to have :-) Have a lovely weekend xo

  10. It's sad to see the destruction of Sandy - one step and one day at a time. You are right, there is always a brighter side and although it may seem overshadowed for many people right now - it is there. And I like your choice to brighten the day...... cake will do it every time.
