Divine and Refined Look of the Day: Shirts Under Dresses

Monday, April 04, 2011

Recently I was leafing through Vogue magazine when I came across not one, but two ads (in the same issue) where the model was donning a shirt UNDER her dress.

How completely fabulous is this look? The crisp off-white shirt only adds to this breathtaking gown.

This trend is one that frum (Jewish Orthodox) women have been employing forever. We LOVE fashion and many are willing to wear any dress as long as there is a shirt under it. Basically the rule is this: Skirt to the knees, sleeve to the elbow, neckline to the collarbone. Sound restrictive? It ain't all that bad! We happen to be quite lucky because in today's fashion it is quite trendy to be knee lengthed and long sleeved.  We believe that less is more...less skin shown that is. This allows for the inner self to be revealed and appreciated and gives a woman's value a chance to shine (instead of just her body.) And we still adore fashion! These picture prove that we are not alone in this thinking!
This Lacoste ad is a brilliant example in layering. The message being, even a simple polo shirt can be as fabulous as haute couture. But doesn't it also look divine over a long sleeved dress?
This runway look answers a common question in modest dressing: Can one wear a shirt under a strapless dress? The answer?? Absolutely!
One of my fave fashion pics ever: Sara Jessica Parker sporting a striped tee under a strapless dress and layering a jacket on top.  This look is tres chic for a chilly day. (Love the fab shoes too!)
No matter who you are, or where you are, or how old you are, we all have some type of restrictions when it comes to dressing. For some people it has to do with body shape, or comfort, or modesty, or a dress code for work. The lesson here is you can make it work and still remain completely fabulous and fashionable!

Til next time,
xo
