Happy 4th of July Weekend!

Sunday, July 03, 2011

For me, 4th of July weekend is the REAL start of summer. All the kids are firmly squared away in their respective routines and some uninterrupted R&R is actually achievable. This year I happen to be taking a vacation at home, as all my kids except one wanted to go to sleep away camp. I am TRYING to relax and enjoy the quiet but honestly I think I am more 'homesick' for my kids than they are for home! Meanwhile I will continue to try to take advantage of the quiet time to rejuvenate and sort of be my own 'star' this weekend.

STARS AND STRIPES
Speaking of stars...by now we all know that the stripes trend is one of the hottest ones this season, but what about stars? Well Dolce and Gabbana gave them 'star' power in the D&G Fall 2011 Ready To Wear Collection.  Stars and Stripes in fashion indeed!

MEANWHILE...BACK TO SUMMER
Red, white and blue are gorgeous colors to wear in the summer, and they look fabulous combined or separately. Here are some outfit inspirations for your 4th of July barbecue and the rest of your summer too:
Square straw tote $98, Red striped shirt $50,  White belted denim skirt $70, Sam Edelman Leather Espadrille $119.99,  Ralph Lauren Wood Bangles $40.60,  Skimmer Hat $115, Blue and white striped t-shirt $69.95, Red straw clutch $23.60,  Denim skirt with leather trim $30, Red striped flats $60, Top hat salt and pepper shakers $5.99, Converse gold boat shoes $48
Now that we know what to wear, let's get the party started! But how shall we set our table in a way that's both holiday appropriate and also super chic? This photo from pisforparty.blogspot.com is a perfect example of a classy take on typical red, white and blue decor. A simple blue and white striped cloth is a crisp starting point, the blue delft vase adds a level of sophistication and a huge bunch of red carnations adds an inexpensive and exciting burst of color. Be creative and look around your house for your own items to accessorize your table scape. You can never be too chic...even for a backyard barbecue.

And lastly (as mentioned in a previous post), I call myself the un-gourmet gourmet, because I love my food to be delicious, pretty and super easy to prepare. So while searching for a nice 4th of July recipe for you guys I came across this photo and said, "Aha!" this is what I would do:

A slice of simple and delicious pound cake (either store bought or made from a basic recipe) topped with fresh berries and cream is the perfect, pretty AND easy ending to any meal, especially your 4th of July soiree!

Have a fabulous weekend!

Do you know if there is a Gladiator type of sandal that is closed toe? It seems by definition that they're all open...
