Friday Food and Favorites: A Yom Tov Menu, Peep Toe Booties and Some Pinterest Delights

Friday, September 21, 2012

I know that I portray a very organized, put together woman in the online world, but surprise... I too have my issues. Those who know me know that very little strikes fear and anxiety into the depths of my heart more than having to plan, shop and cook for the 20 something Holiday meals we have this time of year.

Sure I've been doing this for about 24 years, quite successfully, if I say so myself. I've been doing this for so long that I hardly ever open up a cookbook anymore. Yet the idea of planning elaborate menus for so many 'dinner parties' in a row; the list making, shopping, cringing as I swipe my Amex yet again, and spending hours in the kitchen, invokes stress, fear and anxiety deep in the pit of my being.

Do you think I'm exaggerating? Ask my family about the torture I put them through minutes before the guests arrive, when I'm panicking that I won't have enough food (!) Or the restless sleep I have before the Holidays, filled with nightmares of hungry guests waiting to be served while there's only one package of frozen chicken sitting on my counter defrosting. And in the end, I always make way too much food and usually have to throw out the leftovers.

Today I finally faced the music, and over my Starbucks mocha, I planned my menus for Sukkos. And if any of you out there have ever shared the same sentiments...trust me, I feel for you...so I'm sharing a couple of my menus to help and inspire you. As far as recipes go, well like I said, I do it all by heart and hand, but I've included my mini kugel recipes below. And if there's a specific item you want to ask me about feel free to leave a message here or email me at ask.fashionisha@gmail.com and I'll try to help you out!

Mini Broccoli Kugels
(recipe approximate)
Mini store bought pie crusts, one bag of frozen broccoli plus two onions processed, 4 eggs, approx 1/3 cup mayo, approx 1/4 cup onion soup mix, salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder. Mix together and spoon in pie shells.
Topping: Corn flake crumbs, oil and brown sugar...sprinkle liberally on top and bake at 350 for about 45 minutes or until edges get golden but not brown.

Mini Sweet Potato Kugels
(recipe approximate)
Store bought mini pie shells, 4 sweet potatoes boiled and mashed with peels removed, mix with 4 eggs, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt to taste. Spoon into pie shells. Add topping as above and bake as above.

Now let's get out of the kitchen and talk about some of my favorites. One of the things on my wish list for this Fall/Winter is a pair of cool peep toe booties. I have my eyes on these...what do you think?

And I'm also loving a lace pencil skirt for Fall...what an easy way to dress up and look elegant!
And for your Holiday tablescapes why not try ombre flowers...I'm loving this trend for fashion and hair so why not on your table?

Also, what's your craisin/mango salad recipe? I've been looking for a good one forever and haven't found any...

Those little pies on the other hand...
I make something similar...but your recipe looks much better! And does the fact that those pics are taken mean you made them and they freeze well?! Do tell!
