Holiday Windows: It's All About Snowflakes and Dreams

Monday, December 03, 2012

Walking down Fifth Avenue in New York City this time of year is better than going to any art gallery or museum. The windows of the dreamy stores are all artfully decorated to evoke fantasies of a better life. No matter what your faith, this time of year is all about miracles. As a Jewish woman, this is especially relevant. Chanuka is a holiday of lights and miracles, and all of the beauty displayed in the creativity of the window displays is like any other work of art. It's beautiful and makes you feel beautiful. And this year's windows were all about the magic of snowflakes and dreams.

Now I'm not sure if it's because I'm too lazy or cheap to invest in an expensive camera, but whenever I photograph the windows, the reflections of the buildings and background meld into the displays. This is not a bad thing. Last year when I posted my pictures of the windows of Fifth Avenue, I received such a positive response to the artful and unique quality of the pictures that many people told me to watermark my photographs.

At Saks the theme is snowflakes. Each window features a vignette of gorgeous fashion melded with a snowflake theme. There was even a window full of laptops, each one with gorgeous snowflake images displayed on the screens. The idea of taking one element, a magical one at that (like people and all things created by G-d, there are no two snowflakes the same), and representing it in so many different ways, while at the same time displaying sparkling clothing, is simply brilliant. Another window shows a huge mirrored sculpture reflecting snow flakes and possible creating an infinite amount of images.  I'm not really sure...

Take a look yourself:

Ahh.. the glam accessories will always make the outfit...
 Even the kids get glamorized!
The overhead snowflake at 57th and 5th:
And of course, the windows of Bendels and Bergdorf were as decadently dreamy as ever:

The windows this year are all about sparkle and light. And hey, who couldn't use a little lot of that these days?

Until next time, with lots of love,
xo

  12. Oh yes, Ma'am! I am loving these ideas Sharon, especially now that it looks as if I will be doing window displays. But there is nothing like the ones in NYC or Paris or other large cities. Christmas in the city or suburbs, country or plains, there is always something beautiful to create. Happy holidays! Anita
