Message of the Week: Let's Stop Bullying Ourselves!

Thursday, December 19, 2013

Hey everyone. I'm so pumped because thanks to my friend, the fabulous Allison Josephs of Jew in the City, modest fashion made it to TV…specifically Hallmark's The Better Show, and I was featured to say my opinion about it all! Check out the video clip HERE:

But what I really got out of this entire experience was completely by accident. While watching the required 30 second ad before the video, I was touched and blown away by the message Special K put out there…an idea that I've been feeling really strongly about recently. That as women we must stop the self bullying! We all do it, and it is probably the most sabotaging thing we can do, impeding our progress on the journey to losing weight and being healthy.

Here's the background story:

A couple of weeks ago I posted this gorgeous photo of Kate Middleton on my Facebook page:

"This is her before she had her baby, right?" One woman protested. But it wasn't. Kate simply is blessed with a thin body. But that doesn't make hers any better than yours. I personally have struggled on my own journey of poor body image and finally succeeded in losing those "last 5 lbs" through lots of hard work, mentally, emotionally and physically. So I posted a comment on this photo for anyone to email me and that I would gladly share my personal success secrets.

The response was overwhelming, to say the least. Women from all over the world emailed me, begging me to share my secret to getting into shape. There was a lot of  desperation and self loathing and it was so sad for me to read, as I identified with every woman and her struggle.

This propelled me to consider writing a book about how I reached my fitness goals, but I want to make it very clear that if I do, it will be less about food and much more about self acceptance and self love…with lots of tips for managing emotional eating. Because without that, the journey to physical and emotional health with regards to eating and body image cannot take place. It is the most crucial building block to reaching your goal.

So you can imagine when I saw this ad how excited I got...

Thanks Special K!

I'd like to ask each one of you a personal favor. The next time you hear yourself, either in your mind or out loud, saying something negative about yourself, please stop and replace it with something you are grateful for. Word by word you will change the way you see yourself. which will change the way you feel, which will change the way you act, which will ultimately change the world.

And you'll probably lose a couple of lbs. too, because you'll know you're worth it!

So what do you think? Should I write that book?

Have a wonderful weekend!

xo

Sharon

PS Don't forget to watch The Better Show clip and let me know what you think!

  2. Yes, write the book! And I totally agree with stopping the fat talk. The funny thing is that when I was in my teens and twenties I was constantly worried about my weight and wanting to be skinnier. Now after 3 babies and in my late thirties, I look back at those pics and realize that I was actually skinny but couldn't appreciate myself or my body at that time. My mother used to always tell me that one day I'll realize how young and beautiful I was and how hard on myself I was, so I should enjoy my body now before I get too old and it's too late. She's so right. I love my body now, eat right and am grateful for every day I'm alive. Write the book! We can all learn something from your wisdom.

  4. Do you realize that when you write a post that your inner beauty always shines? Seriously.
You should write the book - not only to share your experiences with others, but in writing it you will discover even more about yourself. What a wonderful gift.

The other company who has embraced the 'I am woman hear me roar' approach is Dove. I applaud the makers of Special K and Dove for their positive messages.

  6. Gorgeous post!! I really dislike the hate and negativity women put on themselves and each other. We think because one women is small she hasn't gone through anything like we may have. I've had two children so far and I went back to my weight before them and I got negative remarks about it and how it didn't seem healthy, but I am. I've always been small and that's just how I was made. I eat right and keep active, I have a sweet tooth, so I have to watch that, haha. I breast fed both of my girls until they were past one and I think that helped a lot in losing the weight. But, most of all you must have a positive outlook on yourself. You must love the weight you are at even if it's not the one you want to be at. You will never be satisfied with yourself if you don't first accept yourself as you are. We were all made to be who we are and our bodies are beautiful as they are!! We must stop tearing ourselves down and stop tearing each other down. I like that I don't look like everyone else. I like our differences. Beauty is in and out and if you don't have the beauty inside, the outside won't matter :) I hope you have a wonderful weekend doll Xxx

  7. SHARON! Beautiful Sharon!

First of all, thank you for coming to visit my page! A slice of heaven is the love we all share! And secondly, I love what you are saying here. I am now 55 and have struggled as well all of my life with my body image. I was a dancer, and when you are exposed to comments connecting your looks to your abilities in the dance, it becomes a terrible struggle to stay thin and have a certain look. As a grown woman, it has taken years of learning how to fight back not just my emotional responses, but to slowly let go of what the media tells US we should be like. Each of us has our own beauty, and with the help of a few fashion and make-up tips, we can all look our best....YOU for one, are one of the most gorgeous women out there, and you not only have natural beauty, but it is evident you take good care of yourself, so BRAVO! I do too, and it makes a difference!

It has been a crazy year of a new job. I hope that after this one year of learning a new age level of students that I can relax a bit next year!

Wishing you a late Chanukah and a FABULOUS season of warmth and more celebration of light throughout the entire year! HUGS! Anita

  9. I agree that talking yourself down and bullying your own self about the way you look accomplishes nothing worthwhile!

  10. How ironic that you should post this, I just was in a dressing room the other day and was quite taken back by how I perceive my body to have aged1 So much so that I dint even buy the dress! Why do we do this to ourselves!! I am the biggest culprit and I know I should change for my girls sake! Yet I dont look at other women the same way i judge myself.
Great post, Have a great weekend!

  13. I think girls and women bully themselves because for some reason it's ok to say "I'm fat" and not ok to say "I'm beautiful, when I think it's important to love yourself for who you are.

    You are very wise :)
