POMEGRANATES, APPLES AND HONEY...OH MY!

Monday, September 26, 2011

Rosh Hashana (the Jewish New Year) begins this Wednesday night at sundown, and preparing for this Holiday is a multi-faceted, multi-tasking endeavor. We prepare lavish homemade meals, furnish our families with shiny new wardrobes and beautify our tables. This is all done with the intention of elevating the spirituality in our homes through food, clothing and decor. A simple dinner party this is not!

It can all be a bit overwhelming, but ultimately the hard work is gratifying, because it is both creative and meaningful, and I am so excited to share inspirations for all three of the elements listed above:

   1. A delicious salad recipe using several of the symbolic foods we eat during this holiday
   2. Some gorgeous looks to inspire your Yom Tov (holiday) dressing
   3. A beautiful table scape that has given me my inspiration for how I will set my table for Rosh Hashana

And all three are based on rich red and gold borrowed from some of the main symbolic Rosh Hashana foods like pomegranates, apples, and golden honey that we use to welcome a sweet new year.

Here are 10 symbolic foods we eat on Rosh Hoshana:
1. Fish with head, 2. Squash, 3. Beets, 4. Honey, 5. Leeks, 6. Black eyed peas, 7. Apples,
8. Pomegranates, 9. Carrots, 10. Dates (not shown).

1. Recipe:

Thank you Sarah from Kosherstreet.com for this heavenly recipe, I will be making this:

Pomegranate Poppy Seed Salad

Salad Ingredients:
1/2cup sunflower seeds
¼ cup confectioners’ sugar
½  tsp. cayenne pepper

1 Head Romaine Lettuce, chopped
1 Pomegranate, seeded
1 pint blueberries
½ cup chopped up fresh dates
¼ cup blanched slivered almonds

For the Dressing:
½ cup olive oil
2 ½  tbsp. white vinegar
2 tbsp. poppy seeds
1 tsp. garlic powder
Pinch of salt
Pinch of black pepper
1 packet of Splenda (or 1 ½ tsp. sugar)

In a small frying pan toast the sunflower seeds for about 1-2 minutes. Pour into small bowl and add the confectioners’ sugar and cayenne pepper and mix well. Set aside.
In a larger bowl add the rest of the salad ingredients and the sugared sunflower seeds –mix well.

In a small bowl add all the dressing ingredients and whisk well together. Pour over salad and mix well. Plate and serve.
2. Outfits:
The Inspiration:
The Looks:
A touch of gold and leopard neutralize and pull together the two colors:
3. Tablescape:
There are so many gorgeous fruits and flowers in the red and yellow color family that are by nature perfectly pleasing to the eye.
This table setting inspired me for my own:
Here is how mine came out:

Here's what I did: I purchased yellow and red flowers, apples, pomegranates, lemons and honey from my local grocery store. I purchased flower pots, crystal bracelets, ribbons and mini jars from my local craft store. I placed 4 different sized vases in the center of the table and added the fruit and flowers keeping each type of flower separate and keeping all four vases at different elevations. I place a bracelet around each flower pot and placed a pomegranite inside. I then filled the mini jars with honey and tied a red ribbon around each one. A pile of sheer gold ribbon makes a gorgeous base for the centerpiece.

Total Cost: Less Than $50

  7. This is such a cute post, I just found your blog. I love how you included a recipe and fashion, great contrasting colors and the table settings are so unique. I used to want to do this when I was a kid, my job used to be to set the table. I read your bio, I can't believe you have 5 kids, you look like you're 22. :)
