THE PERFECT BLACK PENCIL SKIRT - FEATURING LAYERWEAR BASICS
Monday, October 31, 2011
This post has been a long time in the making. A while back I was contacted by LayerWear Basics and gifted THE perfect black pencil skirt to review, but I've been a bad girl! I wore that skirt like crazy but only got to the post now! So my apologies to LayerWear Basics, it's been a really busy month and I've REALLY enjoyed the skirt so much.
We all know that the basic black pencil skirt is one of the ultimate foundation pieces for the fashionable and modest dresser. I mean that's a no brainer. Who doesn't own one? Most days I start my day looking like this:
There is nothing more chic than a black pencil skirt and top as the foundation of your wardrobe. If I'm feeling uncreative or unattractive I may just throw on some cool jewelry and a great pair of shoes and stay like this all day. If I'm in a fashionable mood I'll add a great top, belt, jacket, scarf...whatever. But the foundation is the same.
Let me tell you why I love the LayerWear Basics black pencil skirt:
1. The soft yet sturdy material is so comfortable and flattering that you literally feel like you're hardly wearing a skirt.
2. It has just enough stretch to hold you in and smooth you out without showing unsightly bulges or clinging in an unflattering way.
3. The foldover top lets you decide what length you want. You can wear it knee length or up to 6 inches below (depending on your height).
4. The fit is fabulous. The top of the skirt works with generous hips but ends in a flattering taper. This is perfect for wearing under a fitted dress that's too short. No bunchy oversized skirt sticking out anymore!
The only downside? I have to keep checking my daughter's closet to find it because she keeps stealing it from me!
Here are three looks I sported while wearing this fabulous skirt...but as you can see the possibilities are endless. It starts here with the pencil skirt ($35):
LOOK ONE: THE LONG SWEATER
For this look I simply threw on a long cable knit sweater with a detachable faux fur collar, a pair of natural colored booties and a chunky bangle (all items from Forever 21). Look how nice and tapered the bottom of the skirt is.LOOK TWO: DOTS AND CROPPED CARDI
For this look, I was in a random mood and just grabbed a couple of pieces I found in my closet to see how I could mix and match. I figured the black and white polka dots would look great with a pop of happy yellow. I purposely added a pair of unmatched grey booties just to throw off the look even more. Do you think it works? (Top: H&M, Cardigan: Target, Booties: Bakers)LOOK THREE: THE RUCHED MINI
I absolutely love this skirt and when I ordered it online from Karen Millen I knew I would need a layer underneath to cover the open part in the front. As you can see, the LayerWear Basics skirt blends perfectly so it looks like it's all one skirt. Now, that's fashion success! (Belt: Charlotte Russe, Sam Edelman wedge shoes: Nordstrom)
AND SOME MORE IDEAS FOR STYLING THE SKIRT:
Try a colored blouse with a great belt and matching boots, a perennially fashionable trench jacket with leopard accessories and/or shoes, or a wide striped top with ultra chic lace-up-the-back boots. Accessorize with just one or two bold pieces like a fab bangle, scarf or hat.
AND FINALLY, FOR THE CLASSIC CAREER WOMAN:
Channel a retro Jackie O look with some hip houndstooth plus a touch of python and patent. Finish with some fabulous pearls!
Which look is your favorite? How do your wear your basic black skirt?
