NO, WE DON'T HAVE TO WEAR ALL BLACK-WE LOVE COLOR!

Monday, November 14, 2011

This past Saturday night I flew out to Chicago to visit my daughter. As I settled into my cramped seat on my $9 Spirit Air flight (which by the way came out to over $100 because the $9 does not include the $40 in tax and fees plus $50 for my luggage, but that's a different story), I proceeded to keep to myself for a quiet and relaxing flight. But as usually happens to me when I fly, I got into a friendly conversation with the girl next to me.

I mentioned that I'm a fashion blogger, but that my blog is a bit different because I focus on modest fashion, and went on to explain that Jewish women can still be fashionable and beautiful. She mentioned that she was from South Carolina but now lives in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn.  Crown Heights is a diverse community that includes a nice amount of Jewish people, so when I said, "So you are probably familiar with the way we dress," she nodded her head and replied, "Yes, before I moved to New York I knew nothing about Jewish people, but now I know you have to wear all black, right?"

Right then and there I realized the misconception most people have and answered that, no, we do not have to wear all black. We love color, but most Jewish women choose black because a. it's slimming, b. it's an easy way to look chic without putting too much thought into what they wear and c. isn't black the color that New York women famously wear?

The truth is, most women I know truly love color but are a bit afraid of it. I myself tend to wear a lot of black because it is slimming and easy to throw on without much thought. We fear that if we don't get it right, color will somehow make us and our homes look unstylish.

So as I sit in my daughter's fabulously colorful and very chic apartment, I'm excited to share a blog post infused with passionate color to wake up your creativity and ease your fears. I hope you get inspired to try a dose of color in your wardrobe and your home.  But even if you choose to stick with all black (or neutrals), at least enjoy the burst of happiness that vibrant color can bring to your senses.

Always dream big...
Shop your closet and create new looks...
Be yourself, there's enough room for everyone...
Add some color to your home for a feel good vibe...
 Go for bold accessories...
Find a happy place to relax...
 Surprise people with sweetness...
Add a bit of sparkle to your life...
Dress fabulously...
Have fun every day...

Learn something new...

Have a great day!
XO,
Sharon

  1. I like this topic. I started getting into color when I began covering my hair with scarves. Buying a scarf in a bright color or print was a low-risk way to experiment. Now vibrant color (throughout my outfit) is such a part of my personal style, it's hard to imagine that I used to play it safe with black and neutrals!

  12. Great post and topic. Yes, black is easy and always my go to especially when a few extra pounds have crept on....then its a must wear! But I do love color and you have shown so beautifully how wonderful color can be. Funny about your fellow passengers observations.....and I do think most people think of NY women has being crabby, always wearing black and being overly aggresive. I know many Europeans think of us that way....if they only knew:)
Great post.....now let me go throw on a colorful scarf with my black outfit!

  14. This was a very timely post and made me laugh, I guess Jewish and Lutheran women have to wear black because I have a ton of it in my closet. But I’ve gotten bold in the last two weeks I bought a purple sweater and a rich autumn rust color sweater. I know I’m getting wild and crazy but even I feel I need to break out a little. Wonderful post!

    Enjoy you evening!

  26. I live in L.A. and the women tend to wear a little more color, but sometimes I still walk into a wedding and everyone's wearing black but me. I used to feel self-conscious about it, but now I feel like I'm expressing myself.

  28. hahaha, all black. i will admit a fair amount of hasids i know only wear black because they believe its a modest color however the women always wear bright colored scarves ad hats to offset it. now my modern orthodox women are always in color. but i love that u are broaching the subject. dispels those myths.. ;-)
