Happy September! Happy Rosh Hashana!

Wednesday, September 04, 2013

I hope you all had a wonderful Labor Day weekend. Mine was filled with preparations for the upcoming Jewish new year, Rosh Hashana. More than cooking, I love decorating a beautiful holiday table, and since one of the many symbolic foods for Rosh Hashana is the apple, (round like the circle of life and sweet as we hope our new year will be) I love to incorporate them into my recipes and decor.

Here are some inspiring photos to help you get some fun ideas for decorating your holiday and Fall tablescapes, and yeah, I included some of the food I've made as well. Enjoy!

Create this gorgeous and striking centerpiece by attaching green apples to a foam cone with picks, then insert flowers randomly.

Use apples as votives and arrange them on a platter or line them along your table.

Arrange apples on a tray and use them as mini vases...brilliant!

Squash is another symbolic food we eat on Rosh Hashana. I love the idea of using the squash rinds as soup bowls.

I'm totally inspired by this centerpiece. The textural contrast of the natural tree bark against the delicate beauty of the flowers is brilliant. There's no symbolic food in this one, but to me, this is a symbol of the raw beauty we all posses in our lives. If we open our eyes we will see it all around us, even in the simplest things. I'm going to try to copy this and will let you know how it comes out,

Back to apples...and food...we use a lot of them on Rosh Hashana. I plan on making a heavenly honey apple pie that I posted HERE...
...and this gorgeous apple salad that I found HERE.

And here are some shots of some of the other food I've made so far:
Clockwise from top left: Pan fried chicken cutlets in whole spelt flour, broccoli noodle kugel, provencial leek and squash quiche, savory broccoli quiche, brown sugar crusted sweet noodle kugel.

Streusal topped challah (Recipe HERE
For a healthier streusal I use brown sugar, flour and coconut oil instead of margerine.

And, oh, I'm not done here yet. What's a fashion blog without some fashion? To celebrate the new season I decided to add some "Tuesday Shoe Day" Labor Day sale picks just for you. We can't exactly go into the holiday (not to mention Fashion Week) without a fabulous pair of new shoes!

Use the arrow on the right to scroll the sale shoes I've chosen for you. Everything here is 40-70% off and under $200. Scroll  and click on shoes to shop. Have fun!
