You no longer have any excuses.

Had you told someone five years ago, you would’ve been excused. Had you told someone two years ago, you may have been excused. Had you told someone one year ago, if the person was feeling very charitable, you may have been excused. Now your time is up though. If you didn’t know what a natural fancy color diamond is by now, it is official – you have been living on another planet.

The fact is that most people didn’t know that fancy color diamonds existed until a few years ago, even though they have been coveted by royalty and the nobility for centuries. The fact is that given their rarity it is not surprising that they are not well known. It is believed that for every 10,000 carats of colorless (often referred to as white) diamonds discovered, only 1 (yes that is the number one without any zeroes after it) are found.

The Colors of the Rainbow

Colored diamonds come in the following colors: pink, green, yellow, orange, gray, black, white, purple, violet, red, chameleon, champagne, and blue. This is an oversimplification though as there are 90 secondary hues and 9 intensity levels. A colored diamond may come with a secondary or even a third hue, which may add or detract to its value. One thing is for sure though; every colored diamond is absolutely unique.

From a price perspective, red, blue, purple, violet, pink, and green are the most expensive of the colors; orange, yellow, and chameleon follow, with the remaining colors taking up the slack. However, even this is deceptive, as the defining feature of a colored diamond is its color, and although it is one of the lesser characteristics for a colorless diamond when considering the 4 Cs of diamond valuation, when it comes to colored diamonds, color is the major consideration. As a rule, the more saturated with pure color, the more valuable the stone. All else being equal, not all colors are created equal.

Colored Diamond Engagement Rings

So why is it now inexcusable not to know about colored diamonds? Simple. The word is out and has been for a number of years. The celebs have been the best advertisement for these stones. Just think J-Lo, Beyonce, Kate Hudson, Anna Kournikova, Heidi Klum – the A-list goes on and on.

By far the most popular color of diamond engagement ring is pink diamond engagement rings. This is closely followed by yellow diamond engagement rings.

The main source of pink diamonds, The Argyle Mine in Western Australia is quickly depleting and is due for closure in the next few years ensuring that these magnificent wonders of nature will remain rare. However, there are other colors which sell for process that approximate those of colorless stones or are even cheaper notwithstanding that they are much rarer. This means that a colored diamond engagement ring is within the financial reach of almost everyone. It may not be a 5 or 10 carat blue diamond but it doesn’t need to be either.

Which ring would you choose?
