Modesty has officially arrived. At least according to the May 2014 Vogue Magazine which did a full spread on some supremely creative ways to keep the "clothes...about the clothes."
"What we wear is suddenly less about showing off the body beneath." -Vogue
And, by the way, this spread is full of looks that boldly layer dresses over shirts and skirts, sweaters and coats over dresses, and bold and narrow striped shirts under dresses. I dare us to try putting together some of our own striking combinations. This certainly takes layering and pattern mixing to a whole new level!
Valentino dress (similar), Marc by Marc Jacobs shirt, Carolina Herrera skirt (similar), No. 21 sandals
Sweater and dress: Louis Vuitton
Marni coat, Bottega Veneta dress, A.P.C. striped top
Burberry Prorsum coat (similar), Jonathan Saunders sweater (similar), Dries Van Noten dress (similar)
"This is the moment to exercise your creative muscles." - Vogue, May 2014
Alexander McQueen dress, Stella McCartney sweater, Perez Sanz necklace
Peter Pilotto dress, Proenza Schouler shirt
"The stripy tops and sweaters worn under dresses throughout this portfolio underscore just how chic a covered up look has become."
- Vogue, May 2014
And I just had to share this amazing chandelier that was cropped out from the first photo:
Here's some more modest from May's Vogue:
Emma Stone stuns in Valentino
A dove-grey Gareth Pugh number does double duty as a neo wedding gown
I'm excited to shop my closet to put together some bold new outfits. How about you?
Happy Sunday

Great post, especially since I don't know where my Vogue May issue is yet (so annoyed!).
ReplyDeleteI've been noticing this great trend for the last couple of months. From a fashion perspective it makes total sense. The point is to showcase the artwork of the clothes - their design, drape, pattern, texture, line, movement, flow, how they flatter/complement the wearer (and her personality) - so why chop it all up unnecessarily simply to show skin?? The body is a beautiful thing, but the point is what is uniquely being expressed and these looks accomplish that...
Sharon I adore all of these gorgeous layering combinations of pattern and color. It is the way I always dress. Even in summer, I need light layers for air conditioned shops and buildings!
ReplyDeleteHappy Mother's Day my dear!

I love the new header, Sharon.
ReplyDeleteAnd, I did really like this editorial. Even if we cannot manage this look exactly we can add a few pieces with these bold patterns. However, it makes me want to lose about 20lbs by 7pm tonight. xx's
I don't tend to wear a lot of bold pattern but some of these colour combinations are fabulous and the mismatch of patterns should inspire us all to be a little more adventurous.
