Stuck in the Kitchen? It May As Well Be Divine...Plus A Diet Friendly Recipe For the 9 Days

Thursday, August 04, 2011

For the Jewish people, the Nine Days is a very sad time when we mourn the loss of our Beit Hamikdash (Holy Temple). But it's really so much more than that. We mourn because of the reasons for our loss and those include baseless hatred, petty jealousy, gossiping and other sins committed against one another.  I personally try to have the attitude of 'peace over pride'. But it is not easy for me and almost impossible for others who have a harder time with being forgiving. All I can say is let's try, the next time we feel hurt and want to lash out, to take a moment before we react, to think about what we want to bring into this world, what kind of person we REALLY want to be and what type of example we can set for our families and friends around us. No man (or woman) is an island and every small positive action will make a difference!

Now onto happier topics. Although during this time we don't listen to music, get haircuts, shop for new clothes, eat meat or drink wine; we women will always find new and exciting ways to stay creative, and this is where the kitchen comes into play. We spend an inordinate amount of time here trying to come up with as many interesting menus as we can fit into these 9 days using fish and dairy. So here are some divine kitchens to take you away for a few moments from your actual kitchens. And of course following each one is a coordinating 'look' for all of you fashion lovers who would rather be shopping than cooking!

Look #1: Soothing and Lightness
French blue and crisp white with a touch of modern graphics look gorgeous in fashion too:
Look #2: Butler's Black and White
Black and white in patterns and textures is super ladylike here:
Look #3: Gorgeous Grey and Garnet
Grey is a super chic neutral color in fashion but when a touch of garnet is added the whole look explodes with drama:
Look #4: Glorious Greige
I'm a huge fan of combining grey and beige for a super sophisticated look. It's especially appealing when these neutrals are made even more gorgeous with interesting draping:
Look #5: A Touch of Yellow...But Never Mellow
Yellow pops against crisp black and white and the snakeskin handbag actually softens the look a bit:
Ok.  Break's over...now what's for dinner?? Here's my favorite EASY and NON-FATTENING (no carbs!) recipe for the 9 days:

Seared Tuna Avocado Salad:
Ingredients:
2 Fresh tuna steaks (about 1 inch in thickness)
Black and white sesame seeds
Salt and pepper
Olive oil
Mixed greens or romaine lettuce
Other veggies of your choice (I like cucumbers and red peppers)
2 Avocados
Dressing:
1/2 cup of mayonnaise
1/2 cup teriyaki sauce
Pepper and garlic powder to taste

Coat tuna steaks with olive oil, salt, pepper, and sesame seeds. Heat a little olive oil in a skillet til hot. Sear tuna steaks for about 1 minute on each side keeping the inside of the steak raw. Check to make sure you don't overcook.

Fill your plates with your salad greens, veggies and sliced avocados. Drizzle some teriyaki dressing over the salad. Using a sharp knife, slice the tuna steaks into thin pieces and fan them out over the salad. Drizzle the remaining dressing over the tuna and salad.

Enjoy a carb free, completely filling, protein and fiber rich, super delectable lunch or dinner that literally takes only minutes to make!
Have a fabulous day and let me know which kitchen/look was your favorite.

The looks you have chosen are divine.

  6. WOW what gorgeous rooms! The first kitchen with the little bit of blue and all the white is exactly how I like to use blue. It just pops when it's used as an accent in a neutral room. And ohhhhhh LOVE the black and white. I've always been a fan of black and white, have so many black and white dishes with words on them and french phrases because I'm drawn to the graphic quality of it all and the sophistication of black. J'adore!!!!! xoxoxoxo
